Top 13 Common Digital Door Lock Problems and How to Fix Them

In today’s fast-paced urban environment in Singapore, digital locks have become an essential one to maintain the home and office security while providing convenience. In this guide we share our most common findings, their root cause and how to successfully solve the issue and you can try that at your home too.

1. Lock Not Responding

Issue

The lock is not working. There is no beeping sound, no indicator light and it is not unlocking after giving a valid pin code, fingerprint and even RFID.

Causes

  • The most common reason is the battery will be Drained or Dead.
  • Loose contact between battery and the terminal or terminals got corroded.
  • Glitch in the Lock’s Internal software.

Solution

  • Replace the current batteries with new high-quality alkaline batteries. Avoid using rechargeable batteries because they provide lower voltage to smart locks. we recommend using Energizer or Duracell.
  • Check the battery compartment whether there is rust or corrosion. If anything, Clean gently with a dry cotton swab or a small brush. If corrosion is severe use a small amount of isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab. Then reinsert the battery after it is dry. (Do not use water or any liquid cleaners)
  • Some smart lock models like Xeno Alexi Pro have emergency power input with 5V power bank using USB-C port.
  • With the help of manufacturer’s manual instructions reset the digital lock. This will clear the Glitch. (Note: some resets will erase all stored PINs, fingerprints, or RFID data)

 

2.PIN or Password Not Working

Issue

You are entering the PIN code to unlock the door but it is not unlocking. Some users will get temporary lockout.

Causes

  • The PIN you are entering may be mistyped or incorrect.
  • Temporary Lockout Due to Multiple Wrong Attempts.
  • PIN has been changed or deleted without your knowledge.
  • In rare cases, low battery or glitches can cause issue like this.

Solution

  • Double-check the PIN you enter. In some models, random number can be added before or after to prevent PIN theft.
  • If your lock has temporarily disabled input due to wrong attempts, wait for 5–10 minutes.
  • Use the alternative access methods like fingerprint, RFID, or mechanical key.
  • If you have Administrator access reset the pin or add a new Pin code.
  • Check the battery is fully charged. If you still facing the issue refer the lock manual and perform a soft reset of the lock if possible.

 

3.Fingerprint Sensor Not Working

Issue

The Fingerprint sensor is not properly responding when you placed your finger or it continuously rejecting a valid fingerprint.

Causes

  • Your fingers may be Wet, oily, or dirty that reduce the sensor’s ability.
  • Dust, smudge or skin residue on the sensor also affect the detection.
  • Your fingerprints are not enrolled properly.

Solution

  • Gently wipe the sensor surface with a soft, dry microfiber cloth.
  • Check whether your fingers are dry and clean. We have seen 20% of false rejection are due to sweaty hands.
  • Delete and Re-register your fingerprint by capturing multiple angles, positions. Higher-end models like the Philips EasyKey Alpha uses semiconductor sensors that improve fingerprint accuracy significantly.

 

4.RFID Card or Key Fob Isn’t Working

Issue

You tap your RFID card or key fob, but the lock doesn’t respond at all or displays an error sound/light.

Causes

  • The Card may be got damaged or scratched.
  • There can be dirt, dust, or grease on the surface of the reader.
  • The Card has not been registered properly or the Data got erased.

Solution

  • Check with another registered card if it worked the problem is with your card.
  • Wipe the RFID reader panel with a soft, lint-free cloth gently.
  • Keep the RFID cards away from mobile phones, magnets, magnetic clasps, or electronic devices to avoid magnetic interference.
  • If nothing works register a new RFID card using admin mode. Check whether the card is held steady and flat while registration.

5.Lock Jamming or Not Locking Properly

Issue

The Lock fails to engage or you hear that the motor attempting to operate but the bolt is not extended.

Causes

  • The Door is not aligned properly with frame so that bold may not line correctly with strike plate.
  • The dust, debris or a small foreign object inside the bolt chamber can restrict smooth movement.
  • In Overtime, moving parts in the lock may become dry or wear out which cause motor to stall.

Solution

  • Check whether the door is properly aligned with the frame. If it doesn’t then check common issues such as sagging or loose hinges, warped or swollen wood or a misaligned strike plate and then tighten or adjust the hinges.
  • Use a can of compressed air to blow out any dust or debris from around the bolt and internal chamber.
  • Apply graphite powder or a dry Teflon-based lubricant and avoid oil-based lubricants to the bolt and internal components.

 

6.Beeping Sounds or Flashing Lights

Issue

Beeping Sounds

The lock randomly emits beeping sounds and/or flashes red or blue lights.

Causes

  • Most of the digital locks indicate this kind of signal as a Low battery warning
  • Multiple incorrect PIN code entries or unauthorized attempts may trigger warning beeps or flashing lights.
  • Internal software or firmware malfunctions can cause the lock to behave erratically.

Solution

  • Replace your existing battery with new battery.
  • Refer to your user manual for LED and Sound Code Meanings (each brand uses different signals).
  • If your lock supports Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connectivity via an app, check for firmware update. If the problem persists do factory reset. Igloohome locks, for instance, offer firmware updates through Bluetooth.

 

7.Can’t Unlock from Inside

Issue

Can’t Unlock from Inside

While you are inside the home the door is not opened while using the handle, keypad, or thumb turn.

Causes

  • Many digital locks have Privacy mode or child lock that disables unlocking from the inside.
  • Internal components of a lock may misalign which prevents the handle or knob from functioning properly.
  • Battery can be completely drained.
  • Frequent use can wear out internal components of a lock especially after years of use.

Solution

  • Check whether child lock or privacy mode is activated and disable it. Refer to your lock’s user manual for specific instructions.
  • If the battery is dead, check for emergency power option because most of the smart locks have this feature so that you can activate the lock.
  • Contact the lock brand’s customer support for model-specific help or unlock codes, or have a certified locksmith open and inspect the mechanism professionally.

 

8.Auto-Lock Not Working Correctly

Issue

The door does not lock automatically after closing.

Causes

  • Auto-lock timer may not be set or may be set too slow.
  • Auto lock function relies on sensor the sensor malfunctions, the lock may not detect that the door is closed and will fail to engage.
  • In some models the automatic locking function is disabled by default.

Solution

  • Use the app or lock panel to set the desired delay time depending on your performance. (e.g., 10s–180s).
  • Check the position of the magnetic door sensor and realign the sensor or replace it misalignment persists.
  • On models like the Igloohome Mortise 2+ Digital lock, auto lock setting is managed through the app. If using a lock panel, consult the user manual for instructions.

 

9.Smart App or Remote Unlock Isn’t Working

Issue

You are unable to connect your mobile app with your digital lock, or remote unlock doesn’t work.

Causes

  • Poor Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connection
  • Your smart lock app or the firmware may be outdated.
  • The Lock has not been paired properly during setup.

Solution

  • Check whether your Bluetooth is ON and keep your device within 10–15 feet while trying to connect with the lock.
  • Keep your router nearer or install a Wi-Fi range extender to strengthen the coverage near the door. Restart your modem or router to solve network issue.
  • Check whether the app and firmware are updated if not update it.
  • Remove the existing pairing, reset the lock and repair it again from scratch.

 

10.Access Logs Missing in App

Issue

Access Logs Missing in App

You can’t able to see the real time entry or exit activity of the lock. Logs are outdated or missing data.

Causes

  • The Lock may be disconnected from Wi-Fi or Bluetooth which makes it unable to communicate with app or cloud.
  • Cloud sync may be disabled in lock setting or in app configuration.
  • The Mobile app doesn’t have permission.

Solution

  • Ensure whether the smart lock is on and within range of the Wi-Fi network or paired Bluetooth device.
  • Make sure that the cloud synchronization is enabled and check whether data is transmitted and stored remotely.
  • Grant app permissions for notifications and Bluetooth and check whether the app is allowed to run in the background and is not being restricted by battery saver and other.

 

11.Authorized Users Denied Access

Issue

Authorized Users Denied Access

Previously working fingerprints, cards, or PINs are no longer granting access to authorized users.

Causes

  • User profile may be accidently or intently get deleted.
  • The Locks internal memory may have been corrupted.
  • Adding more than limit may result in rejected entries, overwritten users or denying access to previously enrolled users.

Solution

  • Delete the affected user profile if still exist and register the new one.
  • Check and update firmware which may fix memory handling bugs or improve compatibility.
  • Remove the unused profiles and free up space for other.

 

12.Motor Sounds Weak or Struggling

Issue

Bolt not coming out fully

You can hear the motor is trying to operate but bolt moves slowly or got completely stuck.

Causes

  • There may be low power from old batteries.
  • Dust, grime, or lack of lubrication can increase friction and worn gears or components can cause resistance inside.
  • The bolt or guiding mechanism is out of alignment.

Solution

  • Replace the old batteries with fresh ones.
  • Apply the graphite powder to the gear train and sliding components. Operate device manually to make the lubricant to spread.
  • Check whether bolt’s path is blocked. Then Loose the guides or screws, realign the bolt and re-tighten it. Test the bolt manually or with low power for smooth movement.

 

13.Mechanical Override Key Not Working

Issue

You have inserted the backup key, but it won’t turn or unlock.

Causes

  • Wrong key may be used.
  • Lock cylinders can jam from dust, rust, or lack of use, especially in humid or outdoor areas.
  • Lock clutch may be jammed

Solution

  • Check whether it is the right key and the it is not damaged.
  • Apply dry lubricant like graphite powder or a Teflon-based spray (never oil-based).
  • If your key still won’t works, call the certified locksmith.
